YouTube reveals the toll of war on "conspiracy theories"

YouTube said that the time users spend watching fake or conspiracy-related content has declined significantly, thanks to the actions that have been taken.

YouTube has faced much criticism for videos promoting content that "contradicts logic and facts," and is promoting silly things, but the site has not taken the initiative to delete it in order to preserve the principle of freedom of expression.

For example, some claim that the Earth is flat and not spherical, as science says, but YouTube does not delete clips of people posting videos promoting this "wondrous" opinion, although scientifically wrong.

The Google owned website reported that it was able to reduce the time it watched by 70 percent in the United States, but the extent of the change in other parts of the world has yet to be seen.

On Tuesday, YouTube said there will always be content on the platform that "is contrary to our policies, but it does not cross the red line of course," the Washington Post reported.

The site confirmed that it has made important efforts to limit the spread of this inaccurate type of content, by prompting users to watch more reliable clips, or refer them to them when they have finished watching the video "Disinterested."

As part of this awareness campaign, users watching YouTube clips in some countries can see accompanying phrases from the "platform", such as an explanation about the funder of a particular media platform.

Social media platforms are accepting a hectic period, as the US presidential election approaches in November 2020, and a number of debate-sensitive issues such as racism have been raised.

Twitter announced the banning of all political ads on the platform, but Facebook has not taken a similar step, and YouTube has not yet determined its position on what is happening in the "Silicon Valley."
