The United States on Monday imposed sanctions on nine people linked to Iran, including the son of Iran's supreme leader, as well as the General Staff of the armed forces, on the 40th anniversary of the storming of the US embassy in Tehran.

The US Treasury said on its website that the sanctions include Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.

The sanctions also affected the advisor to the Iranian leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, and the head of Iran's judiciary, Ibrahim Raisi, "for his role in suppressing the Green Revolution (the popular uprising that followed the 2009 presidential election) and the execution of prisoners in Iran."

The White House said earlier on Monday that the Iranian regime continues to target innocent civilians for use as "pawns" in failed foreign relations, vowing to impose further sanctions.

"We will continue to impose sanctions on Iran until it changes its hostile behavior," the White House statement said.

"Rather than being the world's leading sponsor of terrorism, Iran can put the Iranian people in its priorities," the White House said.

"The United States is seeking peace, and we support the Iranian people. It is time for the Iranian regime to do the same," the White House concluded.

On November 4, 1979, hundreds of Iranians stormed the US embassy in Tehran and detained 52 US citizens for 444. The crisis ended on January 20, 1981, with the release of the hostages.
