A Malaysian court has sentenced a man to jail and a fine after killing a cat in a "brutal way," state media reported in a case that sparked public outrage.
The court ordered a 34-month jail sentence and a fine of $ 9,700 on a 42-year-old Malaysian man convicted of violating protection laws after the cat was placed in a towel in September last year.
However, the perpetrator will remain at large in exchange for bail, as he intends to appeal the sentence. The man is the second person to be jailed for killing an animal. A taxi driver was jailed for two years for a similar crime in January.
The crime angered Malaysians when they watched the videos, which were widely circulated on the Internet, and show the pregnant cat was placed in a dryer, in the early night.
After that, the man entered the money needed to operate the machine and left. A client later found the dead animal and reported it to the police.
"I hope that this verdict will serve as a lesson for the accused and the public not to treat animals harshly," the judge said after the verdict was issued.
