A bet on eating as many boiled eggs has caused a disaster for a man who thought he could compete with his colleague for a relatively small sum.

Two men, who were doing a shop in Junpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India, had engaged in a discussion about eating eggs, local police said.

The two men, who were visiting the Bibganing market in Gonpur, were discussing who could eat more eggs.

To settle the controversy, the two men agreed on a bet of 2,000 rupees, equivalent to only $28, for those who could eat 50 eggs in one session.

Police said Suphash Yada, 42, had just begun to eat his 42 eggs when he collapsed and lost consciousness, and was taken to hospital but died hours later.

Doctors believe that Yada died due to overeating, according to the Indo-Asian News Service. His family refused to comment on his death, The Independent reported.

Deadly Eating Competitions

In August this year, Dana Hutchings collapsed during a food contest in California, where he was suffocated and his face was smashed into the dining table while he fell to the ground.

Medical staff tried to clean the airway of food, but Dana, 41, died less than half an hour after arriving at the hospital.

In another case, 24-year-old Bethan Gaskin was strangled to death in February while trying to figure out how many cookies she could get into her mouth.

The young mother stopped breathing and had a heart attack after several cakes settled in her throat.

In a third case, 22-year-old student Caitlin Nelson collapsed a few minutes after participating in a pie contest during a charity fundraiser at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut in 2017.

She was later pronounced dead in hospital, and her family sued the university.
