U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Iran's Foreign Minister

The Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on Zarif for acting on behalf of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said on its website that the United States has imposed sanctions on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on Zarif for acting on behalf of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement, "Zarif is implementing a schedule of reckless actions for Iran's leader, the regime's chief spokesman around the world."

The White House said the sanctions include freezing any assets of Zarif in the United States or those controlled by U.S. entities. Washington will also seek to limit Zarif's international flights.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran's foreign ministry is not only Iran's diplomatic arm but also a means of promoting destabilizing policies, noting that Zarif and his department are taking guidance from the leader.

Pompeo said the United States will continue to seek a diplomatic solution that addresses the destructive behavior of the Iranian regime, noting that the only way forward is a comprehensive agreement that addresses all Iran's threats, and until then, the campaign of diplomatic isolation and maximum pressure will continue.
