The American singer R. Kelly has been arrested by American authorities in the city of Chicago on charges of sexual crimes, according to law enforcement officials.
NBC news reported that investigators from the New York Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday arrested the 52-year-old singer, who has won several Grammy Awards, is expected to be transferred to New York City.
The Chicago Sun-Times on Friday quoted the attorney general's office as saying that Kelly faces 13 charges of sexual offenses.
For its part, the New York Times said that the arrest of R. Kelly came on the back of new charges, most notably the exploitation of child pornography.
Federal prosecutors have filed 13 new major charges against the singer, most notably the exploitation of child pornography, obstruction of justice and the luring minors, according to the New York Times.
His lawyer, Steve Greenberg, confirmed his arrest, but declined to elaborate.
