Twenty-four people are feared dead, Thursday, in a deliberate fire that targeted an animation studio in Japan's Kyoto city, a fire brigade official told AFP.
The official said the teams found a person on the second floor of the building, with no signs of life, adding that "10 people or more" were found in the same case on the stairs leading to the roof, bringing the total toll to 24 dead.
About 10 people were found lying on the second floor of the building, but were not immediately transferred to medical facilities because they believed they had already died, Kyodo News quoted the city police as saying.
Earlier, Kyodo said more than 30 people were injured in the fire, 10 of them seriously.
The Kyoto City Police declined to comment.
The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation reported that police arrested a 41-year-old man who poured liquid, apparently gasoline, around the studio.
It said the man was injured and was receiving treatment in a hospital, which has prevented the police from questioning him properly so far, adding that he was saying "die" when he set fire to it.
The studio produces the series "SOUND! Jovanium," is scheduled to release a film of its production entitled "Free! Road to the world. The dream" this month.
