Iran said on Sunday its stockpile of enriched uranium would exceed, within hours, the 3.6 percent allowed by the nuclear deal.
The announcement, made by a group of Iranian officials, at a news conference in the capital Tehran, Iran would have exceeded the provisions of its stalled nuclear agreement, signed in 2015 with world powers.
"Iran will not enrich uranium at the moment to the level necessary for the Tehran reactor," the officials said.
Officials confirmed that Iran has the ability to restore work at the Arak heavy water reactor, and that it will move based on their needs.
President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday would be the end of his deadline for Europe to find a way for Iran to go beyond US sanctions.
The development comes a year after US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal.
Trump warned Iran not to "play with fire," when it announced its intention to increase uranium enrichment.
Since then, Washington has imposed sanctions that prevent Tehran from selling crude oil on the world market.
The United States also imposed sanctions on Iran's top officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran said on July 1 that it would not commit itself to keeping its LEU stockpile below 300 kg.
