Many of the people who drowned were in unguarded water bodies. Castaner said, as they try to cope with high temperatures, pointing out that some victims are subjected to heat shock when they jump from hot air to cold water.

The French emergency services recorded a big rise in calls, Thursday, when the temperature in Paris to the highest rate, reaching 42.6 degrees Celsius, according to the Associated Press.

Standard high temperatures are registered throughout Europe, while the continent is reeling under the brunt of the second wave this summer.

Germany's National Meteorological Service has announced a new national record for high temperatures for the third time in a day.

The Meteorological Agency said the temperature was 42.6 degrees Celsius in the town of Lingen in northern Germany, on Thursday afternoon.
