Amidst the escalation of tensions between Yerevan and Baku, Armenia's ambassador to the UAE, Mher Mkrtumyan, confirmed that Turkey blatantly supports Azerbaijan.

Mkrtumyan told "Al Arabiya Net" on Monday evening that "there are still no mediations with Azerbaijan.

He also added that "Azerbaijan started the attack."

It is noteworthy that the intensity of fighting escalated between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region, which led to the deaths of at least 55 people in the second day of clashes.

The forces of the two countries exchanged shelling with missiles and artillery. The clash has renewed concerns about stability in the South Caucasus, a corridor of pipelines that carry oil and gas to global markets.

It is noteworthy that any comprehensive conflict may drag major regional powers such as Russia and Turkey. Moscow has a defensive alliance with Armenia, while Ankara supports Azerbaijan, which is predominantly Turkish.

An unprecedented escalation since the war

"We have never seen an escalation of this magnitude since the ceasefire in the war that took place between the two countries in the 1990s. Fighting is currently taking place on all sectors of the front," said Olesya Vartanyan, a South Caucasus analyst at the International Crisis Group.

In addition, the Nagorno-Karabakh region announced that 27 of its soldiers were killed in the fighting with the Azerbaijani forces on Monday, after it was mentioned earlier that 31 of its soldiers were killed on Sunday, in addition to 200 wounded in the attack launched by Azerbaijan.

Clashes erupted from time to time over decades between the two former Soviet republics over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is located in Azerbaijan but administered by Armenians.
