Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced a joint and comprehensive political initiative to resolve the conflict in Libya on Saturday.
The Egyptian President said in a joint press conference with the Libyan army commander, Field MarshalKhalifa Haftar, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh in Cairo, that the initiative calls for a ceasefire as of 6:00 on June 8, 2020, and obliging foreign parties to remove mercenaries, dismantle militias, and hand over their weapons, along with completing The path of the Military Commission 5 + 5 in Geneva. "
The initiative also aims to ensure a fair representation of all three of Libya’s provinces in a presidential council elected by the people under the supervision of the United Nations for the first time in the country's history.
He said, "The initiative will be the beginning of a new stage towards a return to normal and safe life in Libya."
Al-Sisi explained that the seriousness of the current situation in Libya affects the regional situation, warning against sticking to the military option of the solution in Libya.
For his part, Field Marshal Haftar said, "Turkish interference in the Libyan conflict reinforces the state of polarization in Libya and threatens stability."
He pointed out that "Turkey sponsors terrorism in front of the world and transfers terrorist elements from one place to another within the MENA region, which further complicates the solution to the Libyan crisis."
Haftar emphasized the unity and territorial integrity of Libya, the elimination of terrorist groups classified by Security Council resolutions, and the call for a Libyan dialogue in an immediate manner, with the participation of all segments of the people.
He said: "It will be a social dialogue supervised by a presidential council, and the formation of a national government supervised by the parliament."
For his part, the Libyan Speaker of Parliament said that the army adhered to the armistice, but the Al-Wefaq government headed by Fayez al-Sarraj did not abide by it.
He stressed that when the army moved to Tripoli, it was aimed at fighting terrorists.
