Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday evening that a former chief rabbi of Israel died after being infected with the coronavirus in the most prominent death in Israel as a result of the pandemic.

Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron, who worked as the chief rabbi of Sephardic or Jews of Middle Eastern or North African descent, died late in the day due to problems caused by the coronavirus in a Jerusalem hospital at the age of 79.

"It is unfortunate that Rabbi Bakshi-Doron was infected with the coronavirus and the efforts of the doctors to rescue him failed," said Netanyahu.

Israel reported 11,145 cases and 103 deaths as of Sunday.
