An Italian prosecutor said a heavily indebted man seeking to file a false insurance claim confessed to carrying out two explosions on a farm he owned that killed three firefighters.
Prosecutor Enrico Seri stated that Giovanni Vincenti told investigators that he had planned to blow up his farm in the northwestern Piedmont area by placing two gas cylinders, but that he had made a mistake with a timer connected to the cylinders, triggering two explosions.
Firefighters rushed to the farm after the initial explosion early Tuesday, and were injured in a second, stronger explosion.
According to local sources, the security authorities arrested Vincenti on Friday night.
At a press conference On Saturday morning, Siri said Vincenti told investigators that he had no intention of killing the firefighters.
