The Guardian newspaper revealed that a state visit to Britain by US President Donald Trump in June cost the London Metropolitan Police nearly £3.5 million.
According to the newspaper, this cost has reached a high level due to the tight security measures imposed, amid protests by tens of thousands of people against Trump's arrival in Britain.
Figures obtained under Britain's Freedom of Information Charter show that the final cost of Trump's visit was £3,419,905.
The British authorities had to hire 6,300 police officers to secure the three-day visit, which was widely debated.
According to the data, the cost of this visit has increased significantly, compared to a four-day visit to London in 2018, which amounted to £3 million.
Trump's June visit was his first state visit to Britain, during which he met With Queen Elizabeth II, then spent two days in Ireland.
Meanwhile, the cost of Trump's visit to Ireland, in which he visited his hotel as well as his luxury golf resort in County Clare, has not yet been announced.
These figures only reveal the police bill, not the rest of the expenses spent to receive the U.S. president.
Last June, Trump wrapped up his visit to Britain with the 75th anniversary of the so-called "D-Day" landing of British and allied troops on the french Normandy shores, the first steps to defeat Nazi forces during World War II.
Along with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, 15 leaders from around the world, are at the invitation of British Prime Minister Theresa May and representatives of countries that have allied themselves with British forces to defeat Nazism.
