North Korea has fired "undefined projectiles" into the sea, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted Seoul's army chief of staff as saying.
South Korea later confirmed that North Korea's most recent missile towards the Sea of Japan appeared to be a ballistic missile.
The South Korean presidential office said in a statement that North Korea's launch on Saturday morning was aimed at testing the capabilities of a new type of short-range missile developed by North Korea.
South Korea's chief of staff, According to Yonhap, said the missiles were fired from a location near the northeastern North Korean city of Hamhong and landed in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, noting that "the military is monitoring the situation in the event of additional launches and is on standby."
The launch came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had received a "very nice message" from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump said Kim said he was "unhappy" with the missile tests, which the North Korean leader said were in response to U.S.-South Korean military exercises.
